Why are Medicare Advantage plans being cancelled?

Plans are private contracts that carriers renew with Medicare each year, and carriers withdraw plans or shrink service areas when the arrangement no longer works for them — which is why Medicare has a standing notice process for plans that leave.

The change is a business decision by the insurance company, not a judgment about you and not a change to your Medicare eligibility.

What Medicare formalizes

Medicare maintains a defined mailing for exactly this situation: when a plan leaves Medicare, members receive a notice in October telling them the plan will no longer be available.

What it changes for you

  • Your Medicare itself continues.
  • You get a Special Enrollment Period because you are losing coverage.
  • You gain a time-limited Medigap guaranteed-issue right when a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare.

We do not publish carrier-by-carrier exit counts here unless they appear in the CMS plan files, which is the only list that decides what exists in your county.
